Discovering the Magic of Serengeti Balloon Safaris: Explore Unique Launch Locations
Revealing Launch Sites
Embark on a Serengeti balloon safari adventure that takes flight daily at 06:00 from four distinct launch sites within the Serengeti National Park. These carefully chosen sites cater to different seasons and locations, ensuring a diverse and captivating experience for every visitor. While one launch site operates year-round near Seronera, others are strategically positioned in the Ndutu area (from 25 December to 15 March), the Western Corridor (from June to October), and the northern Serengeti (from July to October).
The Serengeti Balloon Safari Experience
Indulge in the ultimate Serengeti adventure with a balloon safari that promises an unforgettable journey. While it may come with a price tag, this experience is worth every penny. Glide gracefully over the treetops as the sun rises, offering unparalleled views of the vast Serengeti plains. Witness the dawn break and keep your eyes peeled for nocturnal predators stirring in the early light, adding an element of excitement to your aerial odyssey. Skilled pilots expertly navigate the balloon at varying altitudes, providing uninterrupted panoramas of the landscape and opportunities to spot wildlife below. Drift mere meters above hippos in rivers or giraffes roaming the savanna, capturing breathtaking aerial wildlife photos along the way.
Hot Air Ballooning & the Great Migration
For an enhanced chance of witnessing the Great Migration of wildebeest and zebra, consider booking a flight in the Ndutu area between December and March. While other launch locations may also offer glimpses of the migration from above, it’s essential to remember that the herds are constantly on the move. Serengeti balloon flight prices start at US$599 per person, inclusive of the Tanapa ballooning fee of US$40. This comprehensive rate covers a transfer to the departure site, the balloon flight itself, and a champagne breakfast upon landing. Flights typically last between 50 and 70 minutes, with passengers sharing the balloon with up to 16 others.
Planning Your Safari
Prepare for an early start, as transfers from the Seronera area depart at 05:30 and from other lodges around 04:00. Dress warmly and bring a secure bag for your camera, binoculars, and personal items. Balloon safaris can be arranged from most lodges and camps in the Serengeti, but it’s advisable to book in advance, especially during peak season, as this popular activity tends to fill up quickly. In the event of poor weather conditions, flights may be cancelled and rebooked or refunded accordingly.
Understanding the Cost
While balloon safaris may seem expensive, several factors contribute to the price. Balloons require regular maintenance and replacement, with each costing over US$100,000. Operating a balloon flight involves fuel, crew, vehicles, and conservation fees, all of which contribute to the overall expense. Despite the cost, the unparalleled experience of soaring above the Serengeti makes it a worthwhile investment in your African adventure.
